It was at the monthly RTO (retired teachers of Ontario) Port Perry Tim Horton’s conversation over coffee meeting the news was broken by his friends about Robert’s sudden passing. Memories were quickly shared about Robert’s influence on their lives and favourite moments of personal encounter.
It helped recall Robert’s influence on moi. It began when I made the life changing decision to enter the world of Scugog Township Municipal politics with the support of my nine year old granddaughter as my campaign manager in the 2000 election . Having recently retired from the world of education we knew we were entering an arena of which I knew very little including the political boundaries of Ward 1 and it’s bio regions. Robert and Colleen along with the Christie, Hunter families, as well as, others took me under their wings and open my eyes to the importance of our agricultural sector to our local economy, heritage and valued way of life.
In one of encounters with Robert he challenged/invited me to a hands on co op at his dairy farm with the bell ringing at 6:30 am. We made it through the morning and received one of those warm smiles of acceptance from Robert along with increased knowledge about the dairy industry and what it takes to be a master dairy farmer as Robert was.
We send our heartfelt condolences and prayers to Colleen and family. We are at all times the sum of relationships. Scugog has lost a son and a man of compassion. Those whom we have loved and lost are no longer where they were before but wherever we go.
