Sadly, I learned of "Big" John's passing today. He was more than a welding teacher and mentor, he was the most honest and true man I have ever met. His wisdom and giving spirit went beyond the classroom. He is greatly responsible for who I am today, both as a tradesman and human being. He may have even convinced my wife to marry me! Couldn't have done any of it without ya, mate! I'll raise a "Newkie Brun" to the man who was half my height, but I'll ALWAYS look up to. Cheers!! Old friend....proud to have known you.

I am sorry for your loss, John was my teacher for the Welder-Fitter Program back in 2000 and I will never forget all that he taught me. I am currently teaching his program at Durham College and I will continue in his footsteps and do my best to teach as he taught.

I am very saddened to hear about John's passing. He had a rare gift of leaving folks with a smile and a laugh and I mean sometimes with a great big belly laugh. He never complained or said a bad word, was considerate and loved to tease and joke. I will miss him and will always remember him with a smile. My thoughts are with you Gillian, sometimes things just don't make sense. Maureen

I am going to miss John very much. After meeting him at the Port Perry Curling Club, I called him "George" as he was introduced to me. I was hired later that year by DC and worked with John. I still called him "George" when I realized everyone else was calling him John. I explained my story to John and he was laughing at my mix up of his name. He always had a laugh for me. Rest in peace, John. Paul Wraight, Durham College

Many of us will miss George on and off the soccer field but will never forget him. His positive influence on the players, and I'm sure outside the soccer team, was incredible regardless of the circumstances. Also, a smile, beer and a comment that could brighten any room. All sadly missed but never forgotten. Our thoughts go out to George's family.

George's fellow curlers will always remember him with a smile - and his enthusiasm, always ready to join the game or whatever the current task. He was able to inject his good humour into every situation. George was the very definition of a team player. His example taught others what good sportsmanship and fellowship were all about. George has left a mark on so many people who will recall his warmth and good cheer. We will miss him. We know full well that our loss pales next to Gillian's. As she suggests, this one's for George, "Cheers!" ~ Bruce & Diana
