As members of Mabel's family, you must have been very proud of this pricipled and fair minded woman who also had a delicious sense of humour. I was Vice-President when she was President of the Metropolitan YWCA in Toronto in the sixties. She fit so much in to her day and nearly always arrived for night meetings by cab on time but eating a sandwich!I remember a long debate as to wether we should use YWCA property to give information on abortion rights and only following the debate and decision did she point out how apalled she was that no one had raised the question of legality! The Y gave her a much needed access to personal counselling which she felt unequiped to provide for her clients who were often in the throws of a divorce. I was honoured to be at her Investiture in 1971.She was a very special and caring women and I'm sorry that I lost touch with her over the years but I never forgot her and what she stood for. With best wishes, Laura Baldwin

I did not have the opportunity to meet Ms Van Camp until the passing of my mother. However many years prior and as a young teenager at the the time I do remember her name in conversations at our dinner table. "It was a tough day again for her today". "She is working so hard on this case". Upon reflection I believe your remarks encompass the essence that she truly was well known to weigh and balance the sometimes disparate demands of the procedural and the moral. Both my mother Renie Clark, (deceased) and her sister Edith Searle,(deceased) had the utmost respect and great privilege to have known and worked with Ms Van Camp at Beaudoin Pepper and Van Camp for many years. On behalf of them may I extend my deepest condolences to your family. Dale Clark

I have been very fortunate to have known Mabel from the time that I started into practice now fifty years ago last month, and she was a wonderful person to know. I was very pleased with her appointment to The High Court of Justice - there couldn't have been a better person to be the first lady member of that Court. She is a great credit to the Bench and the legal profession in Ontario. I will always have fond memories of her. Ian Carftwright Calgary Alberta

In the late 1980's, as a newly minted lawyer, I was working for a year as a Clerk to the Judges of the Supreme Court of Ontario. During that year there was a murder trial of some notoriety, presided over by Madam Justic Van Camp. The staff working in the Courthouse sat in on this trial whenever we could find a few minutes to watch the well-publicized drama unfold. The largest courtroom available was filled every day with members of the public and press, as well as the lawyers, family members of the victim and of the accused. My strongest memory is of Madam Justice Van Camp conducting this acrimonious trial with great dignity, authority and decorum. But I particularly recall her weighing the arguments made by counsel on a point of procedure. Rather than leaving the courtroom to think through the various factors before making her ruling, Madam Justice Van Camp stayed. The dozens of people in that courtroom sat quietly, watching as she read through her notes and the law presented to her, with her left hand palm up, palm down, palm up, palm down as she considered the two sides of the matter. She calmly took the time needed to make her decision, made it and delivered it. What a marvellous experience for a new lawyer to watch a truly wise Judge exercising her steady judgment. My condolences on your loss.
