To Pat, Hugh, your families, and all of Denise’s cousins nieces and nephews. My deepest sympathy for the loss of your sister, aunt and cousin.
I got to know Denise at university where we were drawn together at first because my grandparents (Paul & Mini Diamond, but not related) had a farm near Greenbank and I spent a lot of time growing up on the farm and with cousins in Port Perry.
I spent many an hour in her residence room drinking tea and talking about life. Denise was smart, witty, a shrewd observer, candid, kind, and a loyal friend. She sent the funniest Christmas cards, many of which I still have.
I had the honour of having Denise pipe at my wedding. Much later I went to see her pipe and compete in the Glengarry Highland Games in Maxville. That’s when I really understood her love of the instrument and her dedication to playing. It was an incredible event.
A couple of years ago she took me birding with her. She talked about how peaceful the birds made her feel. She was so patient and gentle holding out food, waiting for them to come and teaching me to do the same. I think her amazing photographs are filled with her gentle, funny, loving spirit.
Since receiving her diagnosis I’ve seen sides of Denise I’ve always known come out in full strength, her staunch independence and determination to be practical, her thoughtfulness of other people, her openness and vulnerability, her ability to put people (me) at ease talking to her about it, her decision to live her life to the fullest and to keep her spirits up. I have been so sad but at the same time filled with awe of her. She was truly inspiring.
Denise loved and cared about her family. She always spoke so highly of you and was so grateful for all your support. Though I haven’t met you I feel like I have and my thoughts are with you all.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Denise. I knew Denise from working at the Ministry of Finance. She was always very pleasant and polite to deal with. Denise and I shared the love of line dancing. May she rest in peace and may you take comfort in knowing that she is no longer in pain. Chris Kanuch

Our paths crossed in life a couple of times. We worked together at Merrill Lynch in Toronto and we both ended up at Ministry of Finance in Oshawa, I was from Uxbridge, you from Port Perry. We shared many birthdays, Fiesta Week, and our love of reading. You had a wicked sense of humour and loved your Scottish heritage. I will miss you.
