Fran King posted a condolence
Thursday, June 4, 2009
Thursday June 4, 2009 A Tribute to my Dear Friend Helen By Fran King Helen has been one of my favourite people for the past 13 years. Wise beyond her years, she became an inspirational role model for many, including myself. I remember her always carrying around a notebook into which she copied down her ideas about the world. Her words were amazingly descriptive and highly motivating. She had always dreamed of publishing a book: Cookbook of Life, Recipes for Living. I understand that Joe has decided to work on this project for her. Helen faced adversity many times in her life and each time she faced a difficult situation she asked herself: “What kind of life lesson can I learn from this experience? How can I help others with this new understanding? She wanted to put her suffering to good use and to make meaning of it for others. Ever the eternal optimist, we had a couple of inside jokes going on. I am not going to tell you the full stories but the two punch lines are as follows: “There has got to be a pony in here somewhere! and “So far, so good! In 1996 Helen arrived with Dr. Barry Jackson, Head of DDSB Psych Services for her student placement with me in the MCVI Guidance Department. Although I served for a year as her supervisor, Helen quickly became my friend as well as my teacher. She was quite a determined young woman. She had another placement that year running a support group for inmates at Warkworth Penitentiary. You should have heard her describe how she would “dress down for that group. She must have looked like a nun! After her work with the John Howard Society ended, Dr. Barry Jackson hired Helen to become part of the Psych Services team at the DDSB. She loved her years with the DDSB and then continued her counselling work in private practice in later years. Her passion for counselling young people was phenomenal as was evidenced by her work with the students at Port Perry H.S. She loved everything about working inside of a school. She even confided that she loved the smell of a school. Helen continued her involvement with high school students in the Grief and Loss Support Program for several years and was a regular facilitator at the annual Celebration Day at Camp Samac for young people who were dealing with serious illness and loss in their lives. Who better than Helen would know how they were feeling? Helen was able to transcend her own pain by helping others. She made “lemonade out of lemons and became a wounded healer. Even in her darkest moments she had time to ask: “What is going on with you girl? She was a cheerleader offering unconditional support to her clients, her friends and loved ones. Her love of life, zest for living, ways of making meaning out of tragedy was contagious. It was just great to be around such a positive optimistic, funny person! Helen was a pitbull with lipstick on … she coined that phrase first in the ‘90’s and it emphasized her loyalty to her friends. When you became a friend of Helen’s you were a friend for life. She was relentless and tenacious when she set her eyes on a goal: her lengthy education, her sand tray training, her endless renovation projects… and on and on. She loved her friends and family deeply and most of all she loved Joe. Helen’s name is of Greek origin, and it’s meaning is " sunray, and shining light". Her next name is Amelia of Latin and Old German origin, and it’s meaning is "industrious, striving; hardworking. Her third name is Madeline of Hebrew origin, meaning "woman. How descriptive of our Helen; a hardworking, industrious, striving woman; a sunray and shining light. She will always be remembered. I can clearly hear her say to me: “You go girl!! Right on, sister!!

It was my priviledge to have Helen as a personal counsellor. I enjoyed her outlook on life. Now several years after our last session, I was considering locating her again, just to sit and talk at her for a couple of hours. I have missed that opportunity. I will remember things she said to me all my life. I am sorry she can no longer be there for all those who took comfort in her presence. She will always live with me. God bless you and comfort you in your sorrow.
