Reading today that my friend Joel passed away in 2011 made me remember
the wonderful relationship we had in the early 1970's in Wabush Labrador
where he had many business interests and I was his Bank Manager.
He treated myself and my family with great respect and we always looked forward to
his visits. Although we had not seen one another for many years I always remembered his great attention to detail and his pleasant manner. I am happy
he passed through my life.

Shortly after his joining CBC Joel heard of my interest in broadcasting as a career and invited me to sit in on The Bayer Aspirin Hour where he did cut-ins. Y\ears later as an Ad Man at Rothmans we met and were doing a commercial in his home when the rain started. My car was a convertable and Joel ,seeing the rain out of the window, ran out and put up my top! Many "personalities" would never think of doing a simple act of kindness. No wonder we all respected him. he was a BIG man with a BIG heart. He is remembered with affection. Bob Auld

My Mom, Muriel Prentice Bullivant and Joel were first cousins. She died this past Jan. at 93yr. So many of her special memories involved her Aunt Lou, Uncle Norm and all the Aldred cousins at the Port Perry home. Her old photo albums bear witness to the fun they had together - picking berries, swimming, tobogganing, and laughing, always laughing!

My brother and my dad worked on his farm in the 70`s..I`ll never forget the dedication and hard work my dad devoted to his farm as we went to school and cut that big lawn of his. I would like to offer my condolences to the family of this great Canadian. From the first time that I met Joel to the last time, Joel always had words of wisdom for me. His business acumen was always something that I looked forward to learning. His constant encouragement always pushed me towards my goals. Joel, you are greatly missed and it will be a long time before someone fills your shoes.

I have known Joel and his late wife Annie for an number of years, and was entertained by many stories of their extraordinary lives upon their last return to their home on the Island. I would urge Joel to complete his memoirs, but I believe he felt he had more time to do so. Of all of the successful career paths he took, I think Joel most enjoyed farming the land where he spent most of his childhood, and of course, running his general store on the Island Joel was a firm believer in giving back to the community, and that he did in his usual grand style. I shall not soon forget that distinctive, resonant voice, or his wonderful story telling abilities. He served his country well, Joel, I salute you!

my parents were long time cottagers on the island. I believe they bought their land from the aldreds too. We had such great respect for Mr. Aldred growing up and my sister and I would pedal to the store for treats. believe me it was a huge deal for us as we spent all of our summers there and never got to go into town so the store was huge for us.As we got older we would drive by the silo that said dief the chief and were sad when it disapeared.Mr. Aldred was a true gentleman and always took the time to have a chat with anyone who came by. Will be greatly missed.

Joel Aldred will always hold a permanent spot on Scugog shores for myself and many other long time residents. As kids we heard stories about his crazy flying stunts and we were in awe. Haven't seen him for years, but I can remember his great radio voice and can picture him in the back of the store in his white shirt. There was no one else like Mr. Aldred. He will always be a permanent part of my childhood on the island. Condolences to his family and friends.

In 1946, I sat in the CBC Jarvis St. Radio studios and watched my first "Live Radio Cut-In" done by Joel. He gave me a quick lesson in "marking a script" and some tips on becoming an announcer, my dream. In 1957 , now a radio-tv junior producer at MacLaren, I supervised cut-ins on the Dinah Shore Show done by Joel in California ! Working for Hayhurst Ad Co I went to Rothmans as liaison Executive and again, was working near Joel. My last real contact was in the 60's when we were filming a Rothman's commercial at Joel's home on Fifeshire. After one "take", Joel bolted from the set and asked me for my car keys. He returned minutes later a bit wet saying : "Bobby..never leave the top down on a nice convertible when it's going to rain"! I have used that episode often to explain why some people are "Truly Great" ...not because of big deeds only but for the simple acts of kindness they perform for others. R.I.P. A great mentor and a truly great gentleman. Bob Auld

Joel was a prominent figure for everyone on the Island, and a part of every kid who grew up excited to pedal to the store for a treat. I had the good fortune to work for him at home and at the store for 5 years. His standards and expectations were very high, but I learned alot about respect and hard work from him. Rest in peace, Mr. A. You are missed.
