Dear Joy, Ralph, Rick, Leanne, Donna, Denna: Writing to you from Florida. Our son Ian told of seeing the notice of John’s passing in one of the Port Perry newspapers. I am saddened to hear of this news, and Sandy and I send our deepest condolences to each of you and your families. I will reminisce a bit about what John meant to me. In 1961 I turned 16 and wanted to get a summer job at Lake Scugog Lumber because they had a shop, and I loved woodworking. I was told they would be hiring summer students and to come back near the time school was out. Twice I received that message. When school was finally over and I went back again I was told that they had everyone they needed. I was very disappointed and immediately went to see John. He said he didn’t think he would be hiring anyone but that he had a lot of orders to get out that afternoon if I would like to help him. At the end of the day he said he would give me a call if he needed help another day. Within a couple of days he called, and that was the beginning of 17 years of working with Ballard Lumber, beginning at $1.00 per hour. John was a very trusting person, and gave me all kinds of opportunity to learn. From driving a 5 ton truck to downtown Toronto and Hamilton with a load of Sash Pine to unloading a tractor trailer load of bags of cement at 8 am with a hand cart – I loved it all. One day I was to deliver some cement to Prince Albert in the half tonne truck, only to get it stuck. Not wanting to have John pay for a tow truck I got a ride back to the yard and took the lift truck up the Avenue to pull out the truck. On the way I hit some soft gravel on the side of the road and ditched the lift truck. Now we had to get a tow truck to pull both vehicles out. John never got angry or said anything discouraging about the incident. There were other “accidents as well but John always maintained his cool. I know there were times he was upset by things others did that cost him money, but he set a wonderful example to me that getting angry does not solve problems. One of the greatest jobs he gave me was driving Donna and Denna to the ski hills in his new car. A paid day to watch people ski. What a way to earn money. John was very honest and transparent in his business dealings. He treated all his customers with respect – even the ones who didn’t pay on time. He would set boundaries but still let them purchase from him. I know I would never have ventured into my own business without the knowledge I gained from working with John. He was willing to let me know the workings of all areas of his business – from purchasing to markups for sales to accounting and collections. After I completed my time at Ryerson in Architectural Technology and was invited to come back and manage the construction side of Ballard Lumber I could hardly believe that he would trust me to write up a contract to build someone’s house with a fixed price and not check every detail himself. That kind of trust is unusual, but it speaks of John’s ability to put together a team and give each of us lots of room do our best and respect us even when we messed up. Even when John sold the Lumber Yard business, the knowledge I learned from how the sale was completed helped me as I sold our business in 2006. I talked with him before completing that transaction and he was more than willing to give me any advice I asked for. John was like a second father to me as he was my business mentor as well as an exceptional example as a husband and father. I remember so clearly that every day he would phone home to Joy and ask if she wanted him to bring home anything on his way. He always spoke to her with respect and caring. I am so thankful for John, and will miss his wisdom. We will pray for your families that God will bring comfort to you as you adjust to this void in your lives. Ron for Ron and Sandy

We would like to extend our sincere condolences to all of the Ballard family. My parents, Clem and Marg have been friends with John and Joy for over 60 years. I always ran into Mr. Ballard in the grocery store and just a couple of weeks ago we had a little visit. He was always so interested in " hows the family doing?". Our son Mark was his paper boy for many years and fondly recalls his litte visits with Mr. and Mrs. Ballard. He was a wonderful Port Perry man, and will be missed by many. Sincerely; Paula and Garry Copithorn and boys

It was with sadness this morning, that I heard of John's passing. Our family will always remember with appreciation, the kindness John showed our father, George Davidson, following the tragic farm fire in 1964. The offering of a year of employment, and support and encouragement during the building our new home on McDonald Street, will never be forgotten. Joy, our prayers and thoughts are with you and your family at this time.
