Obituary of Marjorie Bernice McDermott

MARJORIE BERNICE McDERMOTT After a short illness, Marjorie McDermott (nee Real) passed away peacefully at the Community Nursing Home in Port Perry on Sunday, October 19, 2008 at age 95. She will be deeply missed by her loving nieces Carol Martin and Leslie Winston (Donald); her great nephews Murray Martin (Leanne), Kenneth Martin (Nicole) and Gregory Winston; her great-niece Laurel Winston and close friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 35 years, Archibald L. McDermott and her brother William Grant Real and his wife Lynette. Marjorie was born in Greenbank Ontario to Minnie (nee Hamm) and William Real on Valentines Day. The younger of two children, she was blessed with a very happy childhood. This blessing was the foundation for Marjorie’s lifetime pursuit of happiness for her own family and for anyone else who was fortunate to have met and known her. It was in Toronto that she made lifelong friends and graduated from St. Michael’s School of Nursing. Marjorie returned to Port Perry and began her nursing career at the Community Memorial Hospital in Port Perry. As a life-long resident of Port Perry, Marjorie became well known to the nurses, doctors and residents of Port Perry as a caring advocate of health care in the community. It was at the hospital that she met her husband "Archie". They were married on June 14, 1941. Upon her retirement, Marjorie became very active in the Hospital Auxiliary. She served as president and was awarded a lifetime membership in recognition of her service to the Auxiliary. Marjorie had endless energy, a giving and caring spirit and a passion for life. She was a woman of immense inner strength and was an inspiration to all who knew her. The family of Marjorie McDermott will receive friends at the WAGG FUNERAL HOME "McDermott-Panabaker Chapel" 216 Queen Street in Port Perry (905-985-2171) on Saturday, October 25th from 1 – 2 p.m. for a gathering to celebrate her life. Private interment Pine Grove Cemetery, Prince Albert. If desired, memorial donations may be made by cheque to the Auxiliary of Lakeridge Health Port Perry. The family wishes to thank Angela Mason and the staff of West Shore Village for the care and attention they provided Marjorie. We would also like to thank Dr. A. Brown, Dr. Stewart, the third floor nurses and their assistants of the Community Nursing Home in Port Perry, who cared for Marjorie with compassion and sincerity.
