My sincerest condolences to friends and family of Mr. Iain Mackie. My heart and prayers are with you at this sad time
I never actually had Mr. Mackie as a teacher because by the time Mr. Mackie was teaching Physics, I had all my credits for that class and so I never had the wonderful experience of his teaching methods.
For that, I am the one that lost.
However, my sister and many others got to experience his commitment to physics and his commitment to make physics fun and interesting. I wish I could have experienced his classes.
I have heard nothing but the greatest of things about Mr. Mackie, so rest assured family and friends, if you didn't know already, Mr. Mackie touched many lives in such a positive way.
RIP Mr. Mackie. You will be remembered as an angel and missed as an angel.
Heaven is gaining a beautiful soul.
Take care of him Lord. He is one of the good guys.

I cannot imagine that Iain’s teaching has had a greater impact on many people’s lives than my own. I could have had many great careers from working with heavy machinery (my only career match-to-interests based on some mid-80's computer algorithm) to restaurant cook.
Iain was my physics teacher for some years at Brock High School and was just the right person to spark my interest in the subject. There is no doubt that, were it not for Iain, I would not have pursued sciences. The Newton's Day celebrations he threw have never been forgotten. Iain’s humor and demeanor were a great combination. Our group had Iain’s class as a home room for some snowy fun day around 1988 and the group of us physicsed up our costumes in his honor. He introduced me to science as cool and gave me that little push to make it a career rather than an oddity. Iain’s enthusiasm in many ways propelled me to pursue a PhD at York, Post Doc at Harvard, research at CERN and to now travel the world flogging the “Phun in Physics” as Iain had posted in class. He was a role model for me in many ways. I wish I could have shared some of these stories with him in person.
As it turns out I am now professor in Physics at York, also Iain's Alma mater. The last time I saw our friend, he came to York University to visit my PhD student research lab. It was quite a nice surprise for some kid he taught for a few years. I remember him telling me about his times at York and just where to find Feynman’s lecture series, and all the other classics, in the Steacie Library stacks.
I visited his home only once, about 20 years ago, while passing by on a motor bike. I can still see him, calm and cool, hands in his pockets, proud of his office library, with that smile smirk of his.
I sadly cannot attend this celebration of Iain as I am attending a physics conference on antimatter in Portugal. Wouldn’t be nice if he were here with me, of course that would be selfish as he is in a far better place still.

I am so saddened to learn of Mr Mackie's passing. My condolences to his family. Mr. Mackie was a wonderful teacher. He was always available for extra help and encouraging words. He somehow managed to make even the most difficult topics fun. I enjoyed his sense of humour. I went on to become a math and science teacher and Mr. Mackie played a role in my decision to do so. I remember him fondly and know that he was a positive influence in my life as well as many others.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mr. Mackie. Taken from you too young. He was one of the best teachers I had and had such a sense of humour. His quote in my yearbook the year I graduated still makes me smile. It states, "To the Geo-neophyte. Well, if you can't do physics, you may as well concentrate on trivial things like landforms." I was not great at physics and loved Geography more. I will never forget his teachings though or his friendliness to his students in the halls. Always there to help if anyone needed it as well. He will be missed by this former student.
