Etiquette for Social Media Condolences

Social media is used extensively by people all around the world. It allows us to keep in touch with acquaintances, family and friends even if they live in a different country. Social media has also provided people with a platform to share their thoughts and feelings.

A Few Pointers

When a person you know passes away, social media provides you with a platform where you can share condolences. However it is crucial to follow certain etiquette. Here are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • It is crucial not to rush to post your condolences online. It is better to wait until a representative of the family makes the official announcement. A person who is grieving will find it difficult to share such news. It is important for you to wait for the right time before you share your condolences on any online platform like Facebook or Twitter.
  • If a close friend trusts you with information and tells you that a loved one has passed away, fight the urge to post information like this on social media. It is essential to respect the person and wait until they are ready and comfortable with sharing the news themselves.
  • It is also necessary that you keep your condolences private. Even if the person has made an official announcement, it is always best to respond privately rather than making your response public. This gives your kind gesture more personalized touch. It is crucial to let them know that they always have a shoulder to cry on if they feel the need to express their feelings. This is a much better way to offer them your support.
