What Do Funeral Directors Do For A Family?

One of the first calls you will need to make when a loved one is about to pass on is to call a funeral director. Funeral directors may run a funeral home or be part of organizations that provide funeral services. There are a number of different things they do for a grieving family such as the following:

  • Arrange for transportation of the body.

  • Prepare the person’s remains/embalm the deceased.

  • Submit all the legal documents and paperwork such as submitting the papers to state officials for the formal death
    certificate.

  • Some funeral directors also help with the applications for veterans’ funeral benefits or resolve insurance claims on behalf of the decedent’s family.

  • They might also notify the concerned federal insurance agencies of the person’s death.

  • Discuss all the details of the funeral services with the deceased’s family. Together with the grieving family, the funeral directors will establish the dates, times and locations of the wake, memorial service, as well as the burial.

  • Help in planning the funeral, arranging the details and handling the logistics of the funeral.

  • They handle various other details such as determining whether the person’s body should be cremated, buried, or entombed. This is a very crucial job because different religions and cultures follow different funeral practices.

  • Help prepare & ship the body if the person dies in a particular place and needs to be cremated/buried elsewhere.

  • While the family members or someone else may manage some of these arrangements, the funeral director needs to be able to help the family in arranging for the pall bearers, preparing the obituary notices.

  • They may also prepare and decorate the site where the service is to be held and will arrange for the flowers etc.
