Families and individuals often struggle to make the choice between cremation and burial and end up settling for the latter because it’s a more traditional concept. An increasing number of people have started to choose cremation because it has several advantages. It’s important to understand the pros and cons of this process before making a choice. This article provides a brief overview of the various advantages and disadvantages of cremation. Here’s what you need to know:

Advantages of Cremation

  • The remains are portable as families don’t need to bury the entire body. After cremation, families receive the ashes that were left behind and they’re easy to store or bury.
  • There are several options available for to deposition of the remains. Families can scatter the ashes, bury it, store it in their home, or find other ways to dispose of it.
  • Cremations are often more affordable because there’s no need to buy a plot to bury the body. Most cremations cost about 1⅙th of the cost of a burial.
  • There is no need to rush the funeral service as the body is cremated quickly. Families can hold a funeral or memorial service at a later date.

Disadvantages of Cremation

  • Not all family members will agree with cremation and it can be difficult for them to accept it. This is especially true if the family is religious and doesn’t view the concept of cremation favorably.
  • Cremation isn’t widely available and many funeral service providers don’t offer it. Families are forced to seek one out in their local area that can provide a good service.
  • Unless the ashes are buried in a small plot in the cemetery, the grieving family may have no place to visit the decedent.
