Do You Still Have To Wear Black To A Funeral Or Memorial?

Choosing the incorrect outfit for a funeral may not seem like a big deal when a loved one has passed away, but it can be embarrassing if you choose the wrong one. What to wear at a funeral depends largely on the nature of the event and the family's preferences. Many wonder whether they need to wear black to a funeral.

Clothes worn to a funeral should be somber and understated. Respect for the deceased should be the focus of the funeral; thus, wearing something that could attract attention is inappropriate.

It's Not Mandatory To Wear Black To A Funeral

If you've never been to a funeral before, you might believe wearing black is mandatory. But this is not a fact. As mentioned, you need to wear something formal and sober but don't have to wear black attire. Wagg Funeral Home has some suggestions on how to dress for a funeral:

Black Is Traditional Funeral Wear

Wearing complete black is a typical Western cultural signifier of mourning because of the color's association with seclusion. That doesn't always mean you have to head out and purchase black suits and dresses for the funeral. Other colors are fine to use as long as they aren't garish or jarring. Funerals are not the appropriate place for some hues, such as those with primary solid or secondary colors like red, yellow, or pink.

Darker shades of grey, blue, emerald, white, and ivory can also work. Any subdued colors or business attire will work if you don't have black clothes. Avoid wearing busy designs or patterns. Try to stick to neutral hues and understated patterns when choosing what to wear.

Keep The Setting In View

There are a lot of details to think about while picking out a memorial or funeral service attire. It is not always necessary to wear black at a funeral, primarily if the service will be held in a less formal setting such as a garden or beach. Some cultures choose black as a funeral color, while others prefer white or red. Seeking the opinion of others who share your cultural background may be a helpful step in choosing appropriate colors.
