The CPP or the Canada Pension Plan is a lump sum payment and the estate or individuals are eligible or receiving this payment after the death of a person. We at Wagg Funeral Home have noticed that several clients are unaware of all the details included in this plan. We can help in providing all necessary information on how to apply for this one-time death benefit.

Who Is Eligible For The CPP Death Benefit?

When it comes to matters regarding an estate, the court-named individual or even the will's executor will take care of it. However, the executor needs to handle this within 50 days of the person's demise. In case the executor is unable to complete this within the allotted period, family members can also apply for this in a specific order:

  • The establishment/individual that bears the responsibility of the funeral expenses.
  • The immediate family member of the deceased
  • The common-law partner of the deceased

Where To Apply For The CPP Benefit

One can apply for the CPP benefit either of the two ways, and they include:

1. An Online Application Process

  • You need to login into your MSCA
  • Fill out the CPP Death Benefit form there
  • Mail out all the required copies of the documents

2. The Paper Application Process

  • Fill out the complete CPP Death Benefit (ISP1200) application
  • Include all the necessary copies of the documents listed
  • You can either mail the form or drop it off at your Service Canada office
  • It’s important to mention your and the deceased social insurance number before mailing it off

It might take anywhere between 6 to 12 weeks once Service Canada receives your application. Once they carry out all the necessary steps of verification, you will receive your payment. For any additional information, please call Wagg Funeral Home today, and our funeral director will be happy to help.
