How Can You Help A Friend As They Go Through The Stages Of Grief

Grieving can be an incredibly painful process, affecting every person differently. Sometimes people recover from their grief while others are unable to shake off the sorrow they feel for a number of years.

How To Support A Grieving Friend

There are different ways to help and support someone that is grieving and our experts at Wagg Funeral Home recommend these tips:

  • Understand That Every Person Will React Differently - Each one of us will experience grief at some point in our life. However, it is crucial to recognize that something, which helped you heal, might not work for everyone. Some people prefer to be in the company of others, while others want solitude. When you are supporting someone, take the time to understand what he or she needs and then comfort them accordingly.

  • Make Only The Promises You Can Keep - Sometimes we feel inclined to say “call me at any time,” “I’m here for you always” etc. Before stating things like this determine whether this is something you can see through in the first place. Make only the promises that you will be able to keep rather than promising them unconditional support that you may not always be able to provide.

  • Lend A Patient Ear - There are times when people are sometimes highly focused on caring for someone in their family when they are grieving. They forget that they need some support as well. Be there to listen and assist them with the things they need.

When you are there to support someone who is grieving it helps them come to terms with their loss and heal faster. As mentioned earlier, determine what the person needs, assess how much you can be there for them, and offer support accordingly. If you would like to learn more about our funeral or memorial services, don't hesitate to contact us at Wagg Funeral Home today and we'll be happy to help.
