Benefits of Planning Your Funeral While You’re Still Alive

In one sense, there is never really a “good time” for planning a funeral, especially when the funeral is your own. However, the other side of the coin is that there are worse times to plan a funeral. When you have some time available, you may want to stop, take stock, and speak your loved ones and some professionals to get some advice and come up with a plan for the day when you pass on. There are a lot of good reasons to do this, but here are the most important.

You Spare Others The Burden

One of the worst times to plan a funeral is when it is for someone you love and that loss has just happened. This is a highly emotion period full of pain, confusion and for some, may be the single greatest moment of suffering they have ever encountered. Now, on top of the mountain of grief they must negotiate, comes the administrative aspects of organising a funeral, considerations of cremation versus burial, and payment of services.

This is the worst possible time for all of these organisational and financial considerations. By not planning your funeral in advance, you have made it an unavoidable obligation for those you leave behind. Planning your funeral ahead of time means that when your loved ones must deal with their grief, that’s all they have to deal with.

You Have Control

Cremation or burial? Do you want a standard coffin? Is there a cemetery you would like to be buried in, a gravestone you would like to have, a message you want to see inscribed, or a particular place you’d like to have your ashes scattered?
If you don’t plan your funeral, you don’t have a say in any of these matters; others will have to make the decisions for you. If you’re the kind of person that prefers to have things done your way, then planning your funeral in advance is a necessity. By setting aside the time, and consulting experienced professionals in your area, you’ll get a feel for what options are both practical and affordable for your location and circumstance. You can make all the provisions and conditions you want, and even ensure some kind of payment structure is in place when you pass on.

Take the time to make these decisions and, if you like, make them a part of your will for added legal legitimacy. If you’d like to know more about funeral planning and options, and live in Port Perry, Ontario, contact us at Wagg Funeral Home. We have the both the funeral and legal experience to professionally, compassionately guide you through this process and ensure your wishes are recorded and respected.
