How to Write a Letter of Condolence

When individuals are unable to attend a funeral or meet the mourning family members directly to extend their condolences, they send letters of condolence. This is a nice way to show your support and to tell the family that you're here to help them in their moment of need.

We at Wagg Funeral Home realize, though, that it can be a little tough to determine what to say in a letter of condolence. Here are few aspects that you can bear in mind when doing this:

  • Ensure that the words are real and offer some consolation to the mourning individual. When a person is lost in grief, even simple words will assist in the healing process.

  • Don't write a letter at random. Just give it some thought before you write something.

  • It is also really important that you pen the letter by hand. That's a lot more personalized than giving one typed on a laptop.

  • Don't write a very long note, since it can cause you to write something that could affect the recipient. It's best to maintain brevity and write a quick one instead.

  • Be cautious when using stationery, since you would not want to write a message on flashy or decorative paper with needless adornments. Use subtly shaded paper without any sketches or colors.

  • You have the choice of sending flowers with your message; just make sure you pick the right ones.

  • When composing a message, it is better to steer away from subjects that signify death or defeat. Your comments should show that you're there to comfort the mourning individual.

  • At the end of the message, use the correct kind words to ensure that they represent sincere compassion.
