Funeral Terminology
Funeral terminology can be very confusing if you’re not a part of the industry. Many families struggle to understand them, which can hamper the planning process. At Wagg Funeral Home, we are always willing to answer any questions you may have regarding the process. Here’s a look at some of the terminology you may want to know:
1. Pre-Planning or Advanced Planning
Many people have specific ideas about how they want their funerals to go. Pre-planning allows you to record your wishes and organize your funeral in advance. The funeral director will make sure everything goes according to your preferences.
2. Burial Permit
You need to obtain permission from local authorities to bury a deceased family member. They will check to ensure there are no legal obstacles before granting the permit.
3. Cremation Permit
Cremation is final and there’s no option to exhume the body if needed. You can only go through with this process after a medical examiner clears the body and the local authorities provide a permit.
4. Embalming
Embalming is the process of preserving the body and stalling decomposition. You can choose this option if you want to delay the funeral service and still hold a viewing.
5. Closed Casket
In some cases, the deceased’s body is severely decomposed or visibly damaged. Families can choose a closed casket funeral to ensure no one can see the body. The lid is nailed shut and the casket is properly sealed for the service.
6. Burial Flag
Active or retired military professionals can get a burial flag upon death as long as they aren’t dishonorably discharged. The flag is showcased at the funeral service as a way to honor the veteran’s contribution.
