Cremation is an ancient way of disposing of a body and it is still prevalent in different cultures, particularly in Asia. The rite has become popular in the West in recent years as well. At Wagg Funeral Home, we have seen many people choose cremation over the traditional funeral rites. Clients often have many questions about this process and we are happy to answer them. Here's a look at some basic facts about cremation:

1 Cremation is Permanent

This is one of the most important factors to keep in mind. Cremation will permanently destroy the body, which means there is no opportunity to exhume it down the line if necessary. If there is some concern about the death or if the body is a part of a legal investigation, cremation isn't the right choice for you.

2. You Can Embalm the Body

People embalm bodies of loved ones to preserve them for a funeral or memorial service. It is a common misconception that the body can't be embalmed before cremation. You can have a full funeral service and viewing before cremation.

3. Ashes Are the Final Remains

Intense heat breaks the body down until only a few fragments remain. These fragments are then pulverized in an industrial machine to create ashes. The crematorium will place the ashes in an urn and then hand it over to the family.

4. Cremation is Affordable

Cremation is more affordable than traditional burials. You can also choose direct cremation if you're on a very tight budget. Direct cremation doesn't have embalming or any additional expenses. Cremations cost less because you don't need a burial plot. You can store the ashes in your home, bury them in the backyard, or even scatter them.
