How to Help Someone Who Has Lost their Pet?

Pets can be trusted companions and an important part of someone’s support system. Many disabled individuals use service dogs while people dealing with anxiety, depression, or panic disorders rely on pets to cope with stress. That's why losing one can be a devastating experience. At Wagg Funeral Home, we have seen several people struggle to support their friends or loved ones in such a situation. Here are some tips that can help:

1. Offer Support

Support pet owners as you would support someone who has lost a family member. Listen to what they have to say, offer comforting words, and help them adjust to the loss as much as you can. Even simple things like giving them a few meals or taking them away for a long drive can help.

2. Accompany Them

Accompany the pet owners as they carry out the final rites for their pets and dispose of the body. Most choose funeral or to bury the body, both of which can have an emotional impact. Leaving them alone at this point will only hurt them more. The silent support will help them get on the path of healing.

3. Check Up on Them

Grieving is a long process and people usually take several weeks or months to regain stability. It is a good idea to check on your loved one regularly to ensure they are not suffering. Take them out for a meal or a movie once every few weeks until they seem more positive and stable. You can also help them put together a memorial of sorts to honor the memory of a beloved pet.

If you want to know about our funeral or memorial services, don’t hesitate to contact us at Wagg Funeral Home today and we’ll be happy to help.
