Coping with the Loss of a Pet

People often underestimate just how devastating the loss of a pet can be. These animals aren’t just our companions but also a part of our family, which means their death can cause intense grief. At Wagg Funeral Home, we have seen people ignore their pain and dismiss it instead of trying to heal from the loss. Here are some tips that can help you cope healthily:

1. Don’t Take Your Grief Lightly

Many people feel silly about grieving for a pet. They feel like they should be able to overcome it quickly and not feel a lingering sense of loss. Don’t make the same mistake, especially if you have lost a pet that has been a part of your family for a long time. Accept how painful such a loss can be and take measures to heal from it.

2. Reach Out to Other Pet Owners

Sometimes it is difficult for people to understand your grief, especially if they haven’t owned a pet before. They can be dismissive of your pain, which will hamper the grieving process. Find other pet owners or join a support group to find people who understand your pain.

3. Create a Memorial

Memorials can help with the grieving process, which is why people make them for human family members. You can make a memorial for a pet as well. Bury their ashes in a backyard and plant a tree over it. Frame their pictures or preserve their favorite toys so you have something to honor them. You can also create a separate photo album dedicated to a pet, which helps with the healing process.

If you want to know about our funeral or memorial services, don’t hesitate to contact us at Wagg Funeral Home today and we’ll be happy to help.
