How Does A Funeral Help In The Grieving Process?
Wednesday, November 27, 2019
Funerals have existed for thousands of years, and many burial sites across the world show that this practice is an essential aspect of how people deal with death. While most do not realize it, funerals are a necessary aspect of the grieving process because:
- They are a way of celebrating the life of and honouring the person that has passed. Family members and close friends come together to recognize the influence the decedent had on their lives. Every person has some value to someone, and there is someone who would mourn their loss. It is this that we honour when we conduct funerals.
- When you lose someone you love, you tend to go into denial. This is very true in the case of traumatic or sudden death. However, when you conduct a funeral for that person, it makes the loss more real, and people can move forward from the initial grief they are feeling.
- Rituals like funerals provide comfort and a certain amount of stability, especially when you are feeling very uncertain and unsure about everything.
- Completing those rituals requires focus, and there is a certain amount of predictability in the process. Going through the motions helps people move forward, and they can deal with the initial shock in a better way.
- A funeral service is a time when family members and close friends say their final farewell to the deceased person. All the attendees can support and comfort each other, which is an essential step towards healing.
- The funeral process provides some spiritual comfort to individuals from different religions. Atheists also find some solace when they conduct a funeral for or a loved one that has passed away.
