Supporting Someone With An Addiction

If a loved one is struggling with addiction, it can be tough for you to handle the situation. Not only do you need to be compassionate and patient, but you have to be able to stand your ground as well. You have to put up a brave face and not make any allowances either.

While you are helping your loved one, doing all these things can disrupt your life and affect your mental health as well. We know from experience that compassion and support can help people with an addiction recover faster. Here are some ways in which you can do it:

  • It is crucial to maintain communication with the person and be honest in your approach with them. Sometimes you may feel that this approach is ineffective, which can cause frustration. However, this is one of the best ways to establish a good report with the person. Slowly but steadily, you will find that there is an improvement in their condition

  • Make it a point to create a compassionate environment to earn their trust. It is not uncommon for addicts to be distrustful of everyone around them. This insecurity affects their behaviour significantly. If you are judgmental, they will not respond to any of the help that you want to give them.

  • On the other hand, if you are compassionate, it can help build trust and prevent relapses

  • Shaming the person does not help when you are trying to get them out of their addiction. It has the opposite effect as they begin to doubt themselves even further. It can also negatively impact your relationship with the person, so it is best not to blame them for their failings.
